Know More About Clinical Trials for Breast Cancer : Way to Treat Cancer Effectively

Treatment Overview

Today most women with breast cancer are diagnosed at an early stage and they benefit from the newer and most effective treatments. There are many treatments available for patients of all stages of breast cancer. Often more than a type of treatment in needed. The treatment for breast cancer include surgery, breast reconstruction surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy or biological therapy, and hormonal therapy.

Effective Surgery

Effective surgery has a significant role to treat the patients of breast cancer. Most women choose between the breast conserving surgery i.e. lumpectomy with radiation therapy or removal of the breast i.e. mastectomy. The clinical trials have proven that both these options provide the same long-term survival rates for most types of early breast cancer.

Summary of Surgical option
  • Lumpectomy: It is  a surgery to remove the cancer or other abnormal tissue from the breast. Also called as a breast conserving surgery or wide local excision since unlike a mastectomy only a portion of the breast is removed. Often doctors refer to a lumpectomy as an excisional biopsy.
  • Partial or Segmental Mastectomy or Quadrantectomy: It is a surgical procedure for breast cancer in which one quarter of the breast tissue is removed along with the muscles of the chest wall within a two to three centimeter radius of a tumor.
  • Simple or Total Mastectomy: A simple mastectomy removes the breast tissue, nipple, areole and skin but not all the lymp nodes. A total mastectomy removes the entire breast including the skin, breast tissue, areola and nipple and the most of the underarm lymph nodes.
  • Radical Mastectomy: This surgical procedure includes the removal of the breast, underlying chest muscle including the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor and the lymph nodes of the axilla as a treatment for breast cancer.
  • Modified Radical Mastectomy: It involves removal of the entire breast including the areola, skin, nipple and most auxiliary lymph nodes while the pectoralis major muscle is spared. Historically, a modified radical mastectomy was the primary method for treating the breast cancer.

Effective Therapies
  • Hormonal therapy: It is a form of systemic therapy that reaches cancer cells anywhere in the body and not just the breast.
  • Radiation therapy: The breast cancer radiation therapy destroys any remaining mutated cells which remain in the breast or armpit region post surgery.
  • Immunotherapy or biology therapy: It is a promising treatment for breast cancer including the advanced and recurrent forms of the disease.
  • Chemotherapy: It is a treatment for breast cancer using anti-cancer drugs that destroy the breast cancer cells.
