Is Back Pain A First Symptom of Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Overview

The prostate cancer is the cancer of the prostate gland, that secretes a slightly alkaline milky fluid constaining 50-75% in volume of semen. It is a gland in the male reproductive system, that helps to neutralize acidity in the vaginal tract  thereby prolong the sperm lifespan. Most prostate cancers grow slow but there are also cases of the aggressive prostate cancer in which the cancer cells will meta size from the prostate to other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes and the bones. This type of cancer will initially have no symptoms but causes pain, problems in sexual intercourse, difficulty to pass urine, erectile dysfunction and death in later stages.

Link Between Back pain and Prostate Cancer

As per some studies, back pain can be indicative of a prostate cancer. If you have noticed a sudden and long lasting pain in your back then this could be due to cancer from the prostate which has spread to the bones in the back. The cancer tends to have a strange effect on the cells in the bone thereby creating new tissues. If you see the X-rays, you will notice the amount of tissue on the bones with cancer seems much denser than what a healthy bone seems like but UT will also have a ivory discoloration.

Other Symptoms

  • Pain during ejaculation
  • A sense of not being able to empty the bladder completely
  • Painful, frequent urge to urinate, especially at night
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Difficulty to pass urine, including straining to pass it or stop and start

How to Know if I am Prostate cancer Patient?

The doctor will ask you to undergo the following test as a part of diagnosing whether you are a prostate cancer patient or not. These tests and exams include a digital rectal exam (DRE), ultrasound, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, biopsy, CT/MRI Scans, bone scans and X-rays.

Effective Treatments for Prostate Cancer

The effective treatments for prostate cancer include High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), Cyber Knife Treatment, Radical Prostatectomy, Robotic Surgery, Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy, Laser Surgery, and Brachytherapy, External beam Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Hormone Therapy and Cryotherapy.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) makes use of high frequency energy to heat and destroy cancer cells in the prostate gland. It is an outpatient procedure generally performed under local or general anesthesia. Since HIFU is non surgical, there is no incisions or blood loss and recovery is quick. Cyber Knife Treatment is a procedure is more comfortable for patients, as radiation is given accurately and treatments are completed in four to five days.

Radical Prostatectomy is the surgery done to remove the entire prostate and any nearby tissues like seminal vesicles and some nearby lymph nodes. Robotic surgery for prostate cancer removal is an advanced technique whereby the robotic arms hold the surgery tools which has very high precision thereby reduces the risks related to the surgery.
