Overview
The colon also referred to as a large bowel, is the last part of the intestine that opens into the rectum which is the passage that connects the colon to the anus. The term colorectal cancer is used for cancer of colon, rectum or both. When cancer begins in the colon, it is called Colon Cancer and when it starts in developing in the rectum, it is called Rectal Cancer.
Colorectal cancer occurs when some cells that line the colon or rectum begin to grow abnormally and uncontrollably. The abnormal growth of cells from cancerous tumors. Colorectal cancer begins with the development of benign i.e. non-cancerous cells known as adenomatous polyps.
Some of these adenomatous polyps may become cancerous and cause colorectal cancer. The possibility of polyps becoming cancerous depends on the type of polyps such as:
- Adenomatous polyps i.e. adenomas – is a pre-cancerous condition of colorectal cancer.
- Hyperplastic polyps
- Inflammatory polyps
Both Hyperplastic and Inflammatory polyps are more common but are not pre-cancerous. Though the exact cause of colorectal cancer has not been clearly established so far yet changes in DNA are considered to be responsible for the conversion of normal cells into cancerous cells.
Many types of research indicate that inherited gene mutations can also increase the risk of colorectal cancer that runs in families. It is also believed that there is a strong association between diet and increased colorectal cancer risk. The reduction of beneficial bacterial flora of colon may contribute to cancer development.
Other factors that may increase the risk of colon cancer include:
- Old age
- Personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
- Inflammatory intestinal conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
- Inherited and Genetic syndromes passed through generations in the family
- Low-fiber, high-fat diet
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Previous cancers
- African-American race has a greater risk of colorectal cancer than people of other races.
In addition, potential risk factors for colorectal cancer are Diabetes, Obesity, Smoking, Alcohol consumption and previous Radiation therapy for cancer.
Majority of the colorectal cancers are Adenocarcinomas and the other rare forms of colorectal cancers are:
- Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (Gists) begin from specialized interstitial cells of Canal in the walls of the colon
- Carcinoid Tumors - begin from the specialized hormone-making cells in the intestine.
- Sarcomas – Although very rare, start in the blood vessels, muscle layers or other connective tissues in the wall of the colon and rectum.
- Lymphomas are cancers of the immune system cells
Treatment for colorectal cancer depends on the stage of colorectal cancer. However, treatment options are:
- Surgery
