Overview
Hydrocephalus is the condition in which
excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up within the ventricular system and
cisterns of the brain leading to the increased intracranial pressure (ICP) and
associated consequences. This may apparently result from the various causes
which can affect the fetus, infant, or adult. Several definitions have been
proposed for hydrocephalus. Summarily, it may be defined as an imbalance
between the absorption and production of CSF. The overproduction of CSF may
also be the cause of hydrocephalus because of choroid plexus tumors, but these
are very rare in clinical practice.
CSF circulates from the brain cavity system and then from
subarachnoid space surrounding the spinal cord and the brain. CSF protects and
nourishes both the brain and the spinal cord. Damage to the brain is caused if
hydrocephalus is left untreated. It has been found that hydrocephalus is commonest
in infants and adults who are above 60 years of age. According to experts, the
normal pressure hydrocephalus accounts for 5.0-6.0% of dementia cases. Causes
of hydrocephalus are a tumor, head injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, previous
posterior fossa surgery, an infection like meningitis, etc.
